Youth and Family Counsellor: Elementary

Job Title:                     Youth and Family Counsellor  (Elementary School)

Reports to:                  Executive Director. Site Supervision from School Principal or Designate.

Role:                           

The role of the Youth and Family Counsellor is to provide identification and intervention in the
areas of counselling, skill development, advocacy, and support services to vulnerable children and their families. Children who are vulnerable are those who are experiencing familial, emotional, behavioural, and/or cultural issues which significantly limit their capacity to function effectively within their family, school, and/or community.

Goals of the Youth and Family Counselling Service:

The Youth and Family Counsellor aims to have students:

a) Remain enrolled and connected with an educational program;
b) Maintain, repair and encourage healthy attachments to family and other significant adults;
c) Develop healthy social relationships and positive self-worth.

Responsibilities:

-Assess the individual needs of children/youth/family in the areas of family capacity, emotional stability, school functioning, peer relations and community profile;

-Manage a caseload determined through partnership with the George Jay Elementary School Principal or designate.

-In collaboration with children/youth/family, develop a service plan that responds to their needs in a holistic way. This may involve the following services:

  • Individual counselling
  • Family counselling
  • Group counselling (i.e. grief/loss, parenting, divorce, social skills, healthy lifestyle choices)
  • Life skill training, which may include social skills development and conflict mediation/resolution.
  • Enhance inter-relationship between families, schools and community.
  • Ongoing consultation with teachers/community professionals.
  • Crisis management intervention
  • Preventative interventions (i.e. CARE kits; health promotion)
  • Facilitate students’ transition to and connection with a new school
  • Assist school staff and administration to design and implement social, behavioural, emotional components of Individual Education Plans and support objectives and goals related to those plans.

-On-going consultation and liaison with administration, teaching staff, community professionals, and the family (integrated case management).

- Be an advocate for and support, consistent with the outcome goals, students and their families within the school environment.

-Refer children and their families to community resources when appropriate.

-Participate in school based activities such as school based case management teams, case conferences, and staff meetings.

-Maintain documentation detailing service plans, outcome measures, community contacts and referrals. ---Complete required reporting material including interim and annual reports.

-Participate in other related activities when required and approved by the Executive Director;

Education and Requirements

a) A degree in Child and Youth Care or Social Work (or equivalent), with related experience working with vulnerable youth and their families.
b) The means and ability to do outreach to students and families
c) Will have a clear Criminal Record and Abuse registry check.
d) Membership with the South Vancouver Island School Based Youth & Family Counsellors Association.

Conditions of Employment:

35 Hours a Week; $27.50-$30.50; Extended Health and Dental Benefits on Completion of Probationary Period; Position is for George Jay Elementary School; Paid holiday time during winter and spring breaks (close to 4 weeks) plus summers off (unpaid); 2019-20 School Year Contract: September 3,2019 - June 26th, 2020;
