Quadra Village Community Centre is inviting applications for a newly established Indigenous Knolwedge Keeper / Elder position.  We have created this position through our Honouring Indigenous Relations Committee and look forward to receiving expressions of interest in this role.  As a Community Centre and Organization working in an urban environment we work with a wide range of Indigenous community members. Indigenous Knowledge Keeper / Elder

Reports to: Executive Director

Role: 
The Indigenous Knowledge Keeper / Elder is a role model, coach, mentor, guide and connector. This position provides a wide range of cultural support to all program areas of Quadra Village Community Centre (QVCC).   The Elder position is available to provide support, guidance, advice and encouragement to all agency staff, volunteers, children, youth and adults. To assist in fulfilling the agency’s vision, the Indigenous Elder works to facilitate a positive, respectful and culturally appropriate environment, while breaking down stigmas and systemic barriers. Staff and volunteers are supported by the Elder to perform their duties in a way that incorporates services rooted in strong cultural values.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
• Sharing cultural knowledge and teachings 
• One to one supportive conversations
• Knowledge of local and urban Indigenous community 
• Assisting with crisis situations
• Knowledge of local resources and ability to refer and connect within the system
• Cross cultural communication
• Working actively with community, volunteers and staff of all ages
• Connecting with and supporting community members, volunteers and staff including the Honouring Indigenous Relations Committee
• Awareness of Indigenous cultural opportunities and ability to share that information
• Maintaining accurate records and providing regular verbal and written activity and basic statistical reports on participation in the Indigenous Elder program 
• Sharing in the work of fostering a safe and welcoming neighbourhood centre 
• To be familiar with and implement QVCC’s policies, procedures and practices
• Performing other related duties when required by the Executive Director
Capabilities: 
• Ability to meet people where they are at 
• Active listening and other supportive conversation skills
• Knowledge of intergenerational trauma (related to self and others)
• Trauma informed practice skills
• Knowledge of local Indigenous protocol
• Wisdom based on Indigenous cultural knowledge and teachings
• Cross cultural communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
• Demonstrated ability in, and sensitivity and commitment to working with diverse populations 
• Basic e-mail and texting skills

Education and Experience:
• Social Work or other Human Service Worker Diploma or Degree (preferred) 
• Community social service experience (preferred)
• 2 years’ experience working as an Elder-In-Residence or an equivalent combination of experience that includes the types of duties related to this position
• Informal or formal equivalencies of the above 

Desirable Attributes and Skills:
• Traditional language
• Computer skills (Word processing, poster making, social media, power point etc.)
• Cultural and other workshop facilitation skills
• Circle teachings / facilitation skills
• Knowledge of Quadra Village Community Centre programs

Terms: 
• 2 year term with a 6 month probationary period
• 7 hours weekly, scheduled over 2 shifts  
• Program supply budget (needs to be determined)
• Vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check required

Salary:  $25 per hour plus 6% vacation
