The Coalition of Neighborhood Houses and Food Security

As food insecurity grows in Victoria-area and Neighborhood House staff witness the need for food rising for the individuals and families they work with, the Coalition is exploring ways to address these needs. We are actively taking steps to increase the quality and quantity of food access for program participants and community members in general. Food security initiatives or services offered by Coalition members include:
• community kitchens
• free or affordable hot meals
• emergency food cupboards
• cooking programs
• gardening programs

Meals and snacks are an important component of most of the programs and services Neighborhood Houses offer. To support the availability of healthy food in each program location, the Coalition has co-established a system of shared food distribution through ColdStar Freight Systems’ “Community Food Project.” Since 2004, the Coalition has benefited from monthly deliveries of recovered foods and much-needed donations of high protein items like cheese and meat through this partnership.
Neighbourhood Houses use these food donations to help create healthy meals and snacks for children, low or no-income parents and families, youth and senior citizens; collectively serving more than 7000 people each month.

Thank you to our donors, sponsors, and funders
